Where Have All the SM Pink Films Gone?
The sad fact is a lot of the classic films I report on here cannot even be found in Japan let alone outside Japan. This probably isn't common knowledge so it comes as little surprise when I am asked, as happened recently, how someone who is not in Japan can get his hands on these golden oldies.
The most recent query had to do with History of Japanese Torture Punishment (日本拷問刑罰史), the 1964 film produced by Shintoho which is considered to be the first full-fledged SM film in Japan.
As far as I know, this film does not exist any longer. Perhaps Shintoho have a copy in a vault somewhere. Or maybe a lone print is slowly deteriorating in someone's attic. To my knowledge, this movie has not been released on tape or DVD.
I would be very happy to be proved wrong about this.
Here's a fellow who knows more about these things than I do. He has put together a list of top Japanese SM films. Amazingly, of the 25 listed, even he has not been able to see seven of them. In fact, he has not seen the first four, followed by three others further down the list.

Director Wakamatsu Koji figures prominently on this list. He directed a film in 1975 called 100 Years of Torture The History. I have seen this film and it is still available although probably hard to get outside Japan. Wakamatsu, who reveled in pink in more ways than one, chronicles the torture of Christians, Chinese, home-grown radicals and I believe there may be at least one additional storyline in this anthology of brutality.
The English titles of the movies on this list are a bit rough. In some cases I'm familiar with the more polished titles but they're just not coming to me at the moment. In others, I simply haven't heard of the film before like, for example, Wakamatsu's 1978 picture, Japanese Torture. The title is so generic that I haven't been able to find any reference to it online.
